Jorge Santayana escribió en La vida de la razón que «aquellos que no recuerdan el pasado están condenados a repetirlo». En realidad no escribió eso, sino su versión inglesa (Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it), porque este filósofo español, curiosamente, escribió toda su obra en inglés.

Transcurrido desde entonces más de un siglo, ahora yo escribo:

Quienes no conocen la Historia, están condenados a repetirla, y quienes la conocen y se empeñan en cambiarla, la repiten igualmente.

Es la actitud, no el conocimiento. El olvido no es traición ni el recuerdo fidelidad.

Well over a century later, I must write:

Those who don’t know their history, are codemn to repeat it, and those who know it and insist on changing it, they repeat it likewise.

It is the attitude, not the knowledge. Oblivion is not betrayal and memory is neither fidelity.
